Forest Bathing Briefing

Description of forest bathing, what it entails, and how we’re going to implement it on our first hike on the Portage Pass trail on Day 2. You will not need anything other than your senses, a positive attitude, and an interest in connecting deeper with nature and yourself

Beginner Guide to Photography

For those using a DSLR camera, we will go over how to shoot manual and cover the basics of Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO. This will also apply to those using the iphone. We will also be going over a cheat sheet I’ll hand out for reference in the field that will include how to train your mind with regards to composition, framing, etc.

Breathwork Session

In this session we will go over the benefits of breathwork and I’ll teach you some Pranayama (an ancient Indian yogic practice) which may come in handy for the hike on Day 5. I use this practice every day to help alleviate discomfort from my disc herniation during hiking! It’s fantastic for healing injuries as well as can help you breathe better during hiking, thus enabling you to hike more efficiently.

Photography Critique​

This session is for anyone who wants me to review and provide feedback on any of the images you have taken during this trip!

Johnson Pass Hike
The Johnson Pass Trail originated in the 1890s as a route for Iditarod miners who raced north from Seward to Nome. It later was developed into a wagon road by merchants and miners who settled the area. The Alaska Road Commission then used it as a thoroughfare through the 1930s. Today this popular hiking trail travels portions of the historic Iditarod Trail between Moose Pass and Granite Creek with bridged streams and mostly easy grades. The entirety of the Johnson Pass Trail is over 20 miles long. You will hike approximately 5 miles depending on your group’s ability. Distance: Approx. 5 miles out-and-back / Elevation: Varies / Difficulty: Moderate / Duration: Approx. 4 hours.

Rise and shine! Today you’ll start the day with a hike to get some spectacular views. In the afternoon you’ll take a glacier cruise where you’ll get a closer look at the massive glaciers that loom over the bay.

Portage Pass Trail
Enjoy a morning hike with your group. Get a first look at Alaska’s wilderness and a bird’s eye view of Portage Glacier and Portage Lake. Distance: 4.4 miles out-and-back / Elevation Gain: 1,437 ft / Duration: 3.5 hours / Difficulty: Moderate

Glacier Cruise
This afternoon you’ll embark on an included Glacier Cruise. Get incredibly close to the glaciers carved by mighty glaciers and shimmering waterfalls cascading against the dark rock into to the sea. Watch for sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, Dall’s porpoises, whales, mountain goats, black bears, and migratory birds.

At the edge of the Kenai Peninsula lies a land where the ice age lingers. Nearly 40 glaciers flow from the Harding Icefield, Kenai Fjords’ crowning feature. Lace up your boots as today you’ll take on a spectacular and rewarding hike on Exit Glacier.

Exit Glacier Hike
The 8.2-mile round trip Harding Icefield Trail is a spectacular day hike leaving from the Exit Glacier Area. Starting on the valley floor, the trail winds through cottonwood and alder forests, passes through heather-filled meadows, and ultimately climbs well above the tree line to a breath-taking view of the Icefield. The top of the trail is a window to past ice ages – a horizon of ice and snow that stretches as far as the eye can see, broken only by an occasional nunatak, or lonely peak. The trail is strenuous! Hikers gain approximately 1,000 feet of elevation with every mile. Allow at least 6-8 hours for the hike. Although the view from the top is well worth the effort, you need not hike all the way to the top to experience the wonders of this trail. Distance: 8.2 miles / Elevation: 3,300 ft / Duration: 6-8 hours / Difficulty: Hard

One of Girdwood’s quintessential experiences is to ride the tram at Alyeska Resort to the top of Mount Alyeska. The 60-passenger tram provides a scenic ride to the 2,300-foot level, where you’ll overlook dramatic views of Turnagain Arm and seven glaciers nestled in the surrounding peaks.

Lodging & Transportation

 

All accommodations and transportation in Alaska are taken care of, including airport transfers from Anchorage. We’ll be staying in a comfortable, well-appointed lodge nestled in the heart of the wilderness. The lodge offers cozy rooms, stunning views, and communal areas for relaxation and socializing. Rooms will be shared with a roommate, and you’ll find it easy to connect and enjoy the adventure together. Don’t worry, the experience is all about camaraderie and unforgettable memories! 😉

Transportation will be provided in vans with plenty of room for luggage. In addition, all meals will be included (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Some meals we will prepare for you and some meals we will eat out at restaurants.

Cancellation & refund policy

If you decide to cancel within the first 30 days of registering, I will provide you a 100% refund. After that, there will be no refunds for cancellations, even illness. If you do need to cancel your trip outside of the 30 day window, I will try to “sell” your spot, however that is not guaranteed. In this case, I recommend buying travel insurance to cover your trip.

If unforeseen circumstances or other reasons arise that I need to cancel the retreat, I will postpone the retreat for an agreed upon time in 2025.

Additionally, I will not provide any refunds 60 days prior to the departure of the trip, if you sign up late.
